It used to be that men’s skin care consisted of a bar of soap, a disposable razor and some Old Spice. Not so today. Men want to keep their skin looking and feeling good but don’t usually want a complicated daily regime. Let’s look at some basics that will achieve that healthy glow easily.
Know Your Skin Type
Skin can be oily, dry, normal, a combination of types or sensitive. Oily skin is shiny with enlarged pores and visible blackheads, dry skin is dull and rough looking and is prone to cracking while normal skin has few visible pores and feels neither oily or dry. Sensitive skin is prone to allergic reactions like itching, rashes and redness. Choose skin care products that match your skin type. If your skin is oily, look for water-based products.
Clean and Moisturize
First, choose products you like so that you’ll actually use them. Use a mild cleanser in the morning and before you go to bed. A good cleanser will help get rid of dead skin cells and help make your skin look brighter. While your skin is still damp, apply moisturizer. This will help seal the moisture in your skin.
A cleanser gets rid of surface oil and dirt but you need a deep scrub once or twice a week to clean out your pores. Choose a gentle exfoliator, not a rough scrub, to avoid irritation.
Many men suffer from nicks, cuts, razor burn and bumps. Never shave dry. It’s too harsh for your skin. Choose the right razor. Multi-blade razors are great because they do the job in one pass. If you’ve got ingrown hairs use a double blade as it won’t shave as close and cause irritation.
Soften facial hair before shaving by placing a warm cloth over your face and neck. Alternately, shave while showering because the warm water will soften your hair and make the job easier. Use a fresh, sharp blade and single strokes, shaving in the direction of hair growth. Dip the blade in warm water after each pass. Start with your cheeks, then move to your chin, neck and moustache area.
Aftershave may be too irritating for sensitive skin. Instead apply a light, oil-free moisturizer.
It’s a must. Nothing weathers your skin more than sun. Damaging rays speed up aging and cause skin to lose its elasticity. Go for a broad spectrum sunscreen for optimal protection.
Aside from these basics there are a few things you can’t buy on the shelf - get a good night’s sleep, stay hydrated, eat a healthy diet, get some exercise and do things you love to de-stress. Get your glow on.
