We all know people who seem to be able to dodge that ugly seasonal cold and other common ailments. Some bodies appear equipped with stronger immune systems than others.
The immune system is the body’s natural defense against infection and disease. We come into this world with an innate immunity and we develop an acquired immunity. Once we are exposed to some bacteria and viruses are bodies recognize and fight them the next time they attack. Vaccines are also considered an acquired immunity.
Can You Boost It?
Truth is there is no direct scientifically proven link between lifestyle and immunity. It’s a system and not a single entity. In general though, implementing healthy-living strategies is a good place to start. Most people that never seem to get sick are very likely leading a healthy lifestyle.
Choosing a Healthy Lifestyle
Every part of your body functions better when bolstered by healthy living. It’s the single best step you can take toward keeping your immune system strong.
Don’t smoke, maintain a healthy weight, keep your blood pressure in check, get enough exercise and sleep, drink alcohol in moderation and eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Aging and Your Immune System
Respiratory infections, influenza and pneumonia are the leading case of death in people over 65 worldwide. Our immune system response weakens with age. Older people tend to eat less with less variety in their diets. We encourage elderly people to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low fat foods.
Scientists are still trying to figure out if there is a direct link between stress and the immune system. Stress has been linked to many things including hives, ulcers, stomach aches and serious cardiovascular diseases. We can safely assume that stress is likely not a good thing for your immune system either. Do your best to remove, or at least mitigate stress, from your life. Do things you love to do for relaxation. Embrace and practice a healthy lifestyle.
