Don't Forget Your First-Aid Travel Kit!

A first-aid kit is an often overlooked item when packing for a vacation. If you’ve ever had a burn, scrape or rash while travelling and found yourself without first aid supplies, you know how a small situation can turn into great irritation. You want to be at your best to enjoy all the new experiences awaiting you, not tired out due to lack of sleep caused by some minor health annoyance that could have been minimized had you been prepared.

Research your destination

You need to examine where you’re going, for how long and why. If you’re sailing around the world for a year your first-aid kit will look a lot different than one stocked for a two week beach vacation. Check out the water quality, biting insects, humidity, air quality, temperature and healthcare accessibility at your destination. Once you’ve completed your research, set up an appointment at Heart’s Travel Clinic located at our Fairfield Plaza location. We can review your itinerary and advise you on vaccinations, travel alerts and much more.

Basic supplies for your kit

Don’t pack anything you don’t know how to use. You may wish to include:

  • adhesive tape and bandages

  • antiseptic wound cleaner

  • blister pads

  • gauze (fatty gauze recommended as it won’t stick to your skin)

  • safety pins and small scissors

  • tensor bandages for sprains

  • tweezers for removing ticks/splinters

  • thermometer

Over-the-counter medications

Before you start buying, check your medicine cabinet to confirm what you normally keep handy in your home. It’s a good idea to bring what you need for your trip because products in foreign countries may have different ingredients than those your body is accustomed to. A holiday is no time for adverse reactions.

Here’s a basic list of medications you may wish to include in your kit:

  • allergy

  • cold and flu

  • pain and fever

  • stomach and intestinal (antacids and laxatives)

  • hydrocortisone cream for itching

Other useful supplies:

  • insect repellant (really important)

  • ear plugs (get a good sleep)

  • aloe gel for sunburn

  • mosquito net

  • sunscreen

If you don’t want to build your own travel kit, we have some in stock. You can customize a purchased kit to your specific needs by adding your own items.

With a first-aid kit packed you know that you’re equipped to meet the everyday health challenges you might encounter. Have a wonderful journey and return home safe!
