If you break a bone you’ll seek medical help immediately to relieve your pain. Likewise any other physical ailment. If you suspect a mental health problem or illness, if you’re like most, the tendency is to carry on, silently suffering, thinking “I can or should be able to fix this myself”.
The reason for this is simple and unfortunately universal. There is sadly still a stigma attached to these illnesses. It is interesting that the word ‘stigma’ has its roots in the Greek language and it means to ‘mark or brand’. In ancient Greece slaves and criminals were branded with an iron so that others knew to shun them, thereby perpetuating their punishment. Thankfully we have come a long way since that time. When it comes to societal acceptance of mental illness we still have some distance to go to bring it into the light of day.
Did you know that one in four Canadians suffer from some form of mental illness? That means we all know someone who is battling some kind of mental issue. There are as many mental disorders as there are physical conditions. The two most common disorders affecting Canadians are anxiety and depression.
It’s easy to understand why it is so difficult for people to step forward and ask for help. Remember the last time you needed help doing something and had to ask a friend or family member to assist you. It takes courage. Magnify that x100 and you will begin to understand how hard it is for a person with a mental issue to ask for assistance. Feelings of shame and embarrassment must be overcome. No one wants to admit that they feel powerless. The act of verbalizing need is the first step on the road to recovery.
No one is immune to mental illness. It provides equal opportunity across races, ages and economic strata. With treatment and ongoing support, a happy, fulfilling and productive life will be regained.
